Volunteers Needed to Help Repair Transitional House for Homeless

A house that will soon provide a place in Elk Grove's homeless to get their lives on track needs some repairs before it's ready to open its doors.

The city approved funds last year for a five-bedroom home in Old Town Elk Grove that will provide three- to six-month stays for the homeless, but the 2,200-square-foot house needs a little work.

Volunteers are needed for the cleanup effort this Saturday. The city's press release follows:

Volunteers Needed for Transitional Home Renovation This Saturday

Elk Grove, CA – Volunteers from the Elk Grove community and City of Elk Grove will roll up their sleeves this Saturday to refurbish Elk Grove’s first transitional house.  Volunteers are still needed for the “Day of Caring” event to remove sheds, replace a fence, and for general landscaping work. 

In July 2012, the City of Elk Grove purchased a home in the Old Town area for transitional housing. The five-bedroom, three-bathroom property will provide a temporary place for homeless people to stay while they get their lives on track and work on finding permanent housing.

The Homeless Solutions Committee, an informal working group that represents various Elk Grove faith-based and civic organizations, is charged with finding innovative ways to address the challenges that face Elk Grove’s homeless population. This is their first major project.  Sacramento Self-Help Housing will operate the transitional home when it opens in early 2013.

“Volunteers have been integral to this visionary project getting off the ground, and there’s still work to be done,” said Mayor Jim Cooper. “All of us can play a role in making the new transitional home a successful haven that helps Elk Grove residents get back on their feet.”
