Who Removes Campaign Signs in Elk Grove After the Election?

Candidates and campaigns can face fines if they don't clean up their election signs.

Campaign signs have been making bright, eye-catching statements all over Elk Grove for months, but they'll be useless as soon as the clock strikes 8 p.m. and Sacramento County polls close.

What happens to them after that?

Elk Grove city spokeswoman Christine Brainerd said it's up to the person whose name is written on the sign.

"The candidates and/or property owners where the signs are would be responsible [for removing them after the election]," Brainerd said in an email. "Any signs on public property were removed as soon as they went up so almost all of what is out there now is on private property."

She noted that the Elk Grove City Council recently said the city shouldn't penalize land owners for campaign sign violations, so enforcement will be targeted toward the campaigns.

If signs still dot Elk Grove's landscape after "a few days," the city will remind the campaigns to remove them. After that, campaigns can face fines of $480, and additional penalties of $125 every 10 days, Brainerd said.
