CRC Business Club Heads to National Competition

After organizing training for Elk Grove small-business owners, Students in Free Enterprise won a regional award for their work.

Earlier this spring, Elk Grove Patch collaborated with a student group at Cosumnes River College to produce . We were happy to hear this week that the CRC Students in Free Enterprise club has won a regional award for their work in the Elk Grove community, and will be heading off to the SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City, MO next week.

Besides the training—which helped Elk Grove entrepreneurs learn about accounting, marketing, social media and more—students in the club have organized an entrepreneurship forum for high schoolers and raised funds for Elk Grove Food Bank Services.

Here's a little more about their work, from a CRC press release:

Cosumnes River College’s Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team will travel to the SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City, MO on May 22-25 to compete for the title of SIFE USA Champion.

After earning the title of SIFE Regional Champion at the Regional Competition in Hollywood in April, the team of six students has been preparing for Nationals and is excited to represent CRC as they showcase the results of the community-oriented service projects they completed during the past academic year.

SIFE students use business principles to improve their community, and over the past year the CRC SIFE Team planned and organized an entrepreneurship forum for local high school and college students, helped with CRC’s Disability Awareness Week, and raised funds towards laptop computers for the Elk Grove Food Bank.

Thanks to the support of grants by Walmart and HSBC North America, the club also coordinated a women’s empowerment workshop on campus and conducted financial education seminars at the Wackford Community Center.

For the past seven weeks the team has been getting ready for the competitions, and the preparations for Nationals kicked into full gear as soon as the students completed their final exams this week.

The mission of SIFE USA is, “To bring together the top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business.”

The CRC SIFE Team wishes to thank the Wagner family for their generous support of the CRC SIFE Team and continues to seek donations to help offset the cost of traveling to Kansas City.
