New Elementary School Planned for Vineyard Area

The Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Education will discuss the issue Tuesday.

Students in the Vineyard area of southern unincorporated Sacramento County could have a new elementary school in the future, but it'll be a while.

The Elk Grove Unified School District is in the initial stages of planning for a new school–tentatively named Vineyard Pointe Elementary School–that will be located north of Gerber Road and west of Bradshaw Road.

The district's school board will meet Tuesday to discuss the mitigation measures construction crews would need to take to avoid environmental impacts from building the new school. The item will return for approval at the Jan. 8 meeting.

When completed, the school could accommodate 850 to 1,100 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Students in that area currently attend Sierra Enterprise Elementary School, and district spokeswoman Liz Graswich said it would be "a while" before there are enough residents in the area to necessitate a new school.

"We are taking advantage of the extremely low property values to acquire this site now, even though it won’t be needed until sometime in the future," Graswich said by email.
