Students From Elk Grove, Florin and Sheldon Win National FFA Awards

More than a dozen awards were given to students from the Elk Grove Unified School District during the Annual National Future Farmers of America Convention.

Dozens of students from three Elk Grove Unified School District high schools brought home awards from the 85th-annual National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention in Illinois last week, the district announced.

The students attend Elk Grove, Sheldon and Florin high schools. Below is the full press release from the district:

Elk Grove Unified high school students brought home a host of awards from the 85th  Annual National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention held October 24-27 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

EGUSD students competed in a variety of events and earned the following national awards:

National FFA Proficiency Awards

The National FFA Organization’s Agricultural Proficiency Awards program recognizes outstanding student achievement in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company, performing agriscience research or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. It serves as the award structure for an FFA member’s supervised agricultural experience (mandatory for all FFA members) and is designed to develop specialized skills in 49 categories that they can apply toward their future careers.

National Agriscience Fair Award Recipients

For FFA members who are interested in the science and technology of agriculture, the National FFA Agriscience Fair competition provides the perfect opportunity to do so.  Held each year during the National FFA Convention, students can compete in the national agriscience fair in one of six categories: animal systems; environmental services/natural resource systems; food products and processing systems; plant systems; power, structural and technical systems; and social systems.

The Career Development Events (CDEs) help students develop the abilities to think critically, communicate clearly and perform effectively in a competitive job market.  There are a total of 25 CDEs, which cover job skills in everything from ag communications to veterinary science. American FFA Degree Recipients

FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to FFA and made significant accomplishments in their Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs) can earn the American FFA Degree – one of the organization’s highest honors.  Each year at the National FFA Convention, approximately 3,500 American FFA Degrees are awarded to students. In addition to their degree, each recipient receives a gold American FFA Degree key.
