The Health Education Council’s HEAL Zone initiative celebrates the culmination of a six week-long basketball league created to address neighborhood safety concerns surrounding Valley Hi Community Park. The basketball league was created in response to a walk audit by South Sacramento residents of the Valley Hi neighborhood. The audit revealed that the resources at Valley Hi Community Park were unused because the area was perceived as dangerous. In response, the Health Education Council headed up a partnership with Bayside of South Sacramento Church, the Sacramento City Police Department, and Valley Hi Covenant Church to bring community residents to watch and play at the park with a Thursday night basketball league.
The Health Education Council’s HEAL (Healthy Eating Active Living) Zone initiative is a three-year $1 milllion grant from Kaiser Permanente aimed to improve healthy eating and enable active living. Please see more information below in the background section.
