Franklin, Sheldon Advance to Semifinals

It was a good night for Elk Grove boys' basketball Friday, as local powerhouses Sheldon and Franklin beat out rivals for spots in the next round of Sac-Joaquin sectional play.

Franklin High School is moving on to the third round of the Division I 2011 California Sac-Joaquin Section State Playoff in boys' basketball after defeating Turlock High School 59-40 at home on Friday.

The Bulldogs and Wildcats were locked into a tight game as each team matched the other shot for shot. The score was tied 20-20 at halftime.

Franklin took over in the second half. Junior wingman Theo Johnson, who leads the Wildcats with an average of 7.7 rebounds per game, had a monster game.

Johnson scored 20 points, had 10 rebounds and blocked three shots on defense, giving him a double-double.

Senior Chukwuemeka Iroegbu, Franklin’s regular season leader in blocks, points and steals, did a little bit of everything against Turlock. Iroegbu scored seven points, brought down three rebounds and had three steals.

Sophomore Darin Johnson also had a good game for the Wildcats. Johnson added 16 points in the victory as Franklin fights to see another day in this win or go home tournament.

The Wildcats will play the three-seed, Jesuit High School, at the Arco Arena on Tuesday.

Sheldon's Firepower Too Much for Rodriguez

Across town, Sheldon High School's Huskies had five players score in double-figures for a decisive win over Rodriguez High School, 93-74.

The Huskies did not have a stranglehold on the game in the early going. Head coach Joey Rollings’ squad only had a 17-16 lead over the Mustangs to begin the second quarter.

Senior postman Darius Nelson had a monster game for Sheldon. He had a team-high 31 points and added 9 rebounds.

Both teams were hot in the second half but the Huskies’ offense was just a little bit better. Sheldon outscored Rodriguez 56-42 down the stretch.

The Huskies’ young backcourt, made up of sophomores Dakarai Allen and D’erryl Williams, played really well.

Allen scored 15 points and led Sheldon with eight assists, while Williams had 22 points and nine rebounds.

The upperclassmen played well for the Huskies also. Senior power forward Ramon Eaton scored 11 points and worked his way down low to grab seven rebounds. Junior guard Kyiron Thomas scored 12 points in the win.

The top-seed Sheldon now hosts fourth-seeded Granite Bay High School on Tuesday, also at Arco.

The winners of each of Tuesday's games will play in the Sac-Joaquin Section Championship March 5.
