What Did You Think of the Olympics Opening Ceremony?

The Associated Press reported Friday that NBC was criticized for failing to stream the opening ceremonies online.

While the rest of the world was watching the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympic Games, Americans were left in the dark.

The Associated Press reported Friday that NBC was criticized for failing to stream the opening ceremonies online.

NBC Universal announced it would stream live every athletic competition from this year's games but had never intended to show the opening and closing ceremonies except on tape delay.

Viewers on the west coast were not allowed to watch the ceremonies until long after the day ended in London.

AP quoted NBC Sports spokesman Christopher McCloskey as saying the ceremonies "are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large prime-time audiences that gather together to watch them."

Twitter was aflutter with complaints regarding the situation and provided links for the BBC live broadcast of the event.

Piers Morgan, a popular host on CNN, tweeted details about the ceremony, including this tweet: "Laughable that America is yet to start watching the Olympic ceremony on TV. Seriously."

In 2008, NBC also waited to broadcast the opening ceremonies in Beijing amid complaints, although the buzz from China helped create a television audience of 34.9 million people, the largest opening ceremony audience in 12 years. The countdown to the start of the Ceremony was marked by 96 children standing around the Stadium with popping balloons, followed by the Olympic Bell ringing in the official start of the Opening Ceremony.

The highly anticipated Opening Ceremony began with an imagined trip along London's iconic river, the Thames, from its source in Gloucestershire to the Olympic Stadium in east London.

Also during the Ceremony, the Olympic Flame made its way along the Thames in a boat piloted by David Beckham.

At the heart of the Opening Ceremony is the Athletes' Parade where teams enter the Stadium in alphabetical order, with Team GB concluding the Parade.

4 - pretty cool and pretty clever, very informative and very British. I loved it. Even The Queen did her part. It was very diverse and the volunteers were awesome. Very clever.

5+ Phenominal! The forging of the Olympic ring to then join its four mates above the stadium is something that will plague all future opening ceremonies directors for events to come. The little musical "Frankie & Johnnie" trip through British music was cute and was enjoyable for people of all ages! (noticed there wasn't any Duran Duran songs though?) James Bonds trek through the castle to stand patiently as Queen Elizabeth was writing a note only to be noticed after he cleared his throat was great! Even the Queens dogs played a great role in the bit! To all of you that say it was "too British" are correct but it should be taken as a comliment not an insult. Remember all the Olymics held here in the USA? Were they too American? I think that if this is the kind of opening ceremonies they are going to have for any Olympics then this one was well done! Long gone are the days of a simple parade of teams and a declaration of the games opening with a simple torch lighting! I can only wonder what the USA is gonna do the next time they host?

IMHO, the first hour was hard to watch. just a cluster of costumed, dancing characters like in a poor traveling circus: a top hat flash mob, and dancing doctors? yikes! i thought it was a trainwreck of entertainment, and have seen so much better on stage locally in Sacramento. loved the parade of nations, and the presenting of the olympic flag and olympic torch. it was tough to see muhammed ali not understand enough to take the flag or wave, as directed by his wife. this year, enjoyed the presenting of the athletes by far than the opening act for the festivities.

Why not down to Grantline and then head back north along the freeway? Plus Kammerer will eventuallyRead More be widened all the way to I-5 and commuters can use that too. Take Grantline to Kammerer to Bruceville.

An overpass and off/on ramps will be built at Whitelock Parkway after the mall is built, whichRead More should take place after the soccer stadium is built, which should take place after the city secures a professional soccer team. Elk Grove better make sure the professional soccer team is a women's team, or else LaWanna Montgomery will be mad.

Thanks for the suggestion. The City is currently studying a new interchange off 99 and Whitelock,Read More and the project is in our General Plan. We’re also updating the Elk Grove Blvd. onramp—currently one of the most outdated on 99 in the region. Work will begin this summer.
