Elk Grove Food Bank to Open Pet Food Pantry

New program aims to help struggling pet owners.

When Elk Grove Food Bank Services held Saturday, staff hoped to collect 2,500 pounds of kibble to donate to low-income pet owners.

Instead, they netted 15,000.

Inspired by that success, food bank workers have decided to create a permanent on-site pet food pantry.

“No one should have to choose between feeding themselves or their pets,” said food bank executive director Marie Jachino in a Facebook post.  “Helping families and pets stay together during times of economic hardship is crucial not only for the family but for our community as a whole."

Animal owners can bring a photo ID and proof of Elk Grove residency to Elk Grove Food Bank Services between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to receive a ziplock bag of pet food.
