Evangelist Visit Will Launch 'Season of Service'

Area churches will match volunteers with community groups who need help.

Sacramento-area churches, including at least one in Elk Grove, will launch a region-wide volunteer push this weekend.

The "Season of Service" kicks off Sunday with sermons from Argentina-born evangelist Luis Palau at in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.

Local groups can list their needs online for volunteer groups and churches to tackle.

As of Tuesday, some of the needs listed on the event website include a call from Roseville Home Start for medical volunteers at a free clinic day in Roseville, requests for mentors and a Citrus Heights group that needs a gas stove. A representative of sits on the event's board.

Palau, who is based in Portland, will speak at the three morning services of the Rosemont church and at a 5:30 p.m. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration.

The volunteer effort will end in June, when the Luis Palau Sacramento Festival is held at Cal Expo. The two-day festival will include Christian music and extreme sports performances.
