Football Players, Firefighters Take on a New Adversary: Breast Cancer

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month kicks off, at least two local groups are organizing events.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and local groups are already gearing up to contribute to the cause.

The football team will host a "Rally for the Cure" home game against the Davis Blue Devils Oct. 14. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and pick up custom pink Laguna Creek Football T-shirts at the game, with all proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure Sacramento Valley.

The J.V. game starts at 5:00 p.m.; Varsity plays at 7:00.

"The event is a fun way for us to bring together our students, players and the community to support an important cause," varsity coach Mark Nill said in a press release.

Firefighters with the will also be wearing pink all month, as will firefighters throughout the Sacramento area.

This is the 25th year that major breast cancer organizations have set aside a month to raise awareness about the disease, which will kill an estimated 39,520 women in 2011, according to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
