Agree with the above post, to the extent that the Patch did a "rip and read" job on this…Read More one, without looking closely at not just the results, but the ranking methodology.
The percent of taking and passing AP classes may be a broad indicator, but is not valid as a ranking measurement. The actual number of AP classes taken is not listed as a factor. Some schools have NO AP classes, and others have a dozen or more available. It appears that whether a student took one or ten was not considered.
Elk Grove Unified is nowhere near the quality of the past, but it's a mistake to blatantly state that "fewer than 20% of the students at EG High and PG are ready for college." Maybe the writers should spend the same amount of time taken to write this piece studying "false positives."
Leah Bos April 24, 2013 at 03:35 pm
You didn't understand the information you were looking at AT ALL!!! Misleading statement -…Read More "Fewer than 20 percent of seniors at Elk Grove and Pleasant Grove high schools are ready for college, based on AP test scores, according to a report released Tuesday." Student CHOOSE to take AP classes (college level cirriculum with a final exam) to earn college credit while still attending high school. These numbers say NOTHING about the population's college readiness when they graduate. The biggest clue - both schools made the TOP 500 LIST, not the Lowest 500 School List.

I agree w/ Nina. Young adults should have mature role models who do not make sex "cool"…Read More and should have either apologized to the girls for seeing his personal property, or could have turned it into a learning experience and moment to remind his athletes that if they are engaging an any sort of sexual behaviors, to be safe and use protection.
Additionally, the school should (if they haven't already) hold a meeting with all staff (athletic and academic) and remind them that they are professionals, not friends of the students.
Children today are not stupid, but glorifying poor behavior and justifying it, only encourages such behavior.
Nina April 24, 2013 at 01:23 pm
Sounds like one of these coaches who endeavor to stay young and be cool instead of being the role…Read More model they are entrusted to be!
I personally agree with this mom. In these types of situations when an individual feels comfortable enough to make such comments like these to young girls, they are testing the waters to see how far they can go. Next you will hear about the coach having a sexual relationship with one of his players...
I know these are strong words but respectively, he fits the “standard profile” of a pedophile.
I know some of the other parents say they "support the coach believing he provides positive leadership" BUT even pedophiles are more often than not respected community members who goes to great lengths to present him/herself as an exemplary person. They develop a persona of goodness above reproach, thus thwarting any suspicion of wrongdoing, especially against a child, whom they have professed great care and concern.
Parents, think about it -- what respectable adult has their condoms visible to not just the kids but to anyone that walked by? Why not in the glove compartment or trunk? Says a lot about his character, judgment and respect for himself and the school.
Not to mention, instead of humbly not responding at all or saying something like, "at least you know your coach is safe" he says, "at least you know your coach is a pimp" ???
NONETHELESS, if he’s not “grooming”, he's walking a fine line and truly needs to get his [blank] in check.

There are those that are so concerned about reproductive rights that they'd rather that a mentally…Read More retarded person be raped than have the family of the same person have any input as to who and how a person with the mental IQ of a 5 year old spends their time or is protected. Yes, indeed, it is very very sad.

Give me a break! Granted building HS/MS complexes that house so many kids has its issues. At the…Read More time it was built, the state funded transportation and the area had not grown up. Fast forward to today, the state abdicates its responsibility to school transportation. The neighborhood has matured. Are those EGUSD's fault?
There is a little bit of responsibility to go around. Ever watch how those kids act when they get out of school? I wasn't raised to act that way. Ever watched drivers that drive stupid? Maybe we need a few cops out there to give tickets to those who do U turns in the middle of the street! There is nothing wrong with kids walking and riding bikes to school. If there was more of that going on, there wouldn't be a traffic issue.
Jim February 8, 2013 at 03:46 pm
This is not a solution. Having 4,000 kids crossing MORE crosswalks and waling FURTHER to school only…Read More pushes the problem further away from the actual property and creates more opportunity for kids to wander, screw around and get injured by vehicles jamming a still narrow entry and exit area at the surrounding parks. Are they going to post more (under-performing) crossing guards to get the kids to Morse park? They currently don't have enough as it is today. Most of the kids aren't crossing the street where the crossing guards actually are!
As another post pointed out, this is a symptom of a problem that the District wont admit to. No school bus service to these schools. Additionally the E-Tran service is lackluster at best and subject to constant flux as "budget concerns" become the continual excuse to provide less and less service to taxpayers in Elk Grove.
Perhaps parents of Franklin/Johnson Students need to look into a legal challenge to the school district's bus policy as a negligent act in light of student safety concerns and recent injuries to students. That might force them to look at the problem and not simply change the geography of the problem. All they have accomplished now is they get to say a kid was hit by a car at a park instead of at their school cross walk.
EGUSD is a disgrace in terms of truly handling issues.

Its an interesting idea. Now, though, who is going to pay for all the computers needed for these…Read More tests? To make the test fair, each student will have to take them at the same time. Where will the schools put them? Who will pay for IT staff to make sure they are operating properly? Who will pay the insurance for the computers, and for the extra electricity needed at each school site? Where are the facts behind the ability to implement this new plan? This plan needs more details explained.

Not only that, but CST participation rate is a metric for AYP, so a school that falls below the 95%…Read More threshold will not make AYP (not that that matters anymore, nor that it ever mattered for non-title1 schools like SM).
I would expect ongoing district assessments are used more than CSTs for placement for intervention given that there are more of them and they are more closely aligned with what is going on the classroom. If its true that schools are using CST results for individual intervention decisions, then I think parents should know that (and realize its probably a bad idea). Your school site council should have info on that since its job is to monitor things like that.
In any case, anyone who wants to opt out should also ask their child. They should have a say in the matter.
Louis Educe January 10, 2013 at 12:07 pm
Gail Ann, while you are correct on the parent opt out right please make sure and tell parents to ask…Read More the school/district what the STAR scores are used for with in the disrtict/school/grage-level. if the child is in the middle grades (7th and 8th are most important) these scores are used to make placement choices for high school courses. Many HS counselors will NOT look very closely at grades (A,Bs) because of the fear of grade inflation - unless you can make sure you child also have some non-biased, standardized (normed) test data their placement choices might be limited. If your child is a high performer you can have them start taking the PSAT in 8th grade (but they will be compared to 10th grade standards). At the lower grade levels the CST data is used to also make placement choices into intervention as well as higher level instructional clusters. Be well aware of the implications of withdrawing your child from the testing before you just exercise you right to "make a point"

I am responding to Shlripathi Kamath's post of January 15 which takes exception to a teacher who…Read More receives a 78% pension for 12 years of teaching based on a salary in her/his last year in the classroom of $78,912. The writer cites no source for the information, and as a retired teacher I am concerned that readers will take this claim as fact.
Please consider the following: teacher retirement in the State of California is administered by the state, not by school districts. It is based on teacher age at retirement, number of years taught, and birthdate.
Here is an estimate of what a California teacher might receive based on the profile the writer uses. It is based on the formula as I came to understand it in going through my own retirement process.
Using the writer's data, here is what a California teacher might receive If she/he
retires this June with 12 years of experience, a birthdate of 1946 and an age at retirement of 64 years and seven moths, her/his retirement stipend would be approximately $1,869.89 per month or $22,438.68 per annum. That equates to 28% of final compensation, not the 78% that the writer decries.

Good teachers of course matter and I think most of them are quite good. I have kids at SRVHS and…Read More CWMS and for the most part am pleased with how professional they are. Sometimes though we do run into a bad one. When that happens my kids are strong enough to work through it and be fine but the weakers ones suffer.
In our school system it is MUCH easier for the teachers because you have VERY involved parents. We are a team and work with eachother. I hate the teachers union but respect the teachers. I also think there are many things we could do to improve things for students and teachers but we lack the backbone to do it.

It might be a good idea for the city and the school board to join forces and construct a walking…Read More bridge that crosses over Whitelock. That way the pedestrians and bike riders would be separated from the traffic. The drop off and pick up traffic is MAJOR!!! Toby and Franklin combined has almost 5,000 students passing through that area everyday....
