Strict scrutiny ought to be used in creating new jobs that are: 1) Far removed from students. 2)Read More Doling out $20,000 raises despite the steep cuts in per pupil spending over the past 5 years at the site level. 3) Creating district office jobs with $150,000+ salaries which are nearly DOUBLE the top salary of our highest paid teachers. 4) Suggesting a district program centered in the Trigg Building can reduce special education placements at our 57 schols when we lack at the site level appropriate staffing levels to deal with the kids who have special needs currently. As a teacher "in-the-trenches" these proposals sound like a lot of paper being pushed around, a lot of bureaucrats being shuffled, and a lot bureaucracies being created that won't directly help me as an employee with my kids. I could be completely wrong, but after 17 years of teaching, I've learned the things that help me best help kids are: 1) High quality professional development like our current Making Math Meaningful Grant. 2) Chances to collaborate with my peers. 3) Special education support staff and instructional aids who are talented, trained, and in rooms teaching kids. 4) Money spent directly on kids (i.e. books, computers, software, experiences like field trips, basic supplies) 5) Instructional coaches who are teachers who have recently left the classroom and intend to return to the classroom. Not the ones who make a career of being "experts" on pedagogy when they have been out of the classroom for years... 6) Having an administrator who empowers me to be innovative and creative and not beholding to a grand "master plan" where I have to be in lockstep with the plan when what my kids need are a personalized, differentiated instructional approach.

Jim, I totally agree. I think streamlining administration (or anybody that isn' t in a classroom)Read More is a great idea. Seeing a $15k raise here and a $20k raise there for director level people. Sounds like we're moving the $ to the top like the rest of corporate America. We can save another $10k/year by removing Dr. Ladds vehicle allowance. The district isn't that big, is he driving a hummer?

I don't know what's stupider? Bringing guns to school or showing them to somebody? Or waiting a dayRead More to let someone know?

You didn't understand the information you were looking at AT ALL!!! Misleading statement -Read More "Fewer than 20 percent of seniors at Elk Grove and Pleasant Grove high schools are ready for college, based on AP test scores, according to a report released Tuesday." Student CHOOSE to take AP classes (college level cirriculum with a final exam) to earn college credit while still attending high school. These numbers say NOTHING about the population's college readiness when they graduate. The biggest clue - both schools made the TOP 500 LIST, not the Lowest 500 School List.
M.Legison April 24, 2013 at 04:18 pm
Agree with the above post, to the extent that the Patch did a "rip and read" job on thisRead More one, without looking closely at not just the results, but the ranking methodology. The percent of taking and passing AP classes may be a broad indicator, but is not valid as a ranking measurement. The actual number of AP classes taken is not listed as a factor. Some schools have NO AP classes, and others have a dozen or more available. It appears that whether a student took one or ten was not considered. Elk Grove Unified is nowhere near the quality of the past, but it's a mistake to blatantly state that "fewer than 20% of the students at EG High and PG are ready for college." Maybe the writers should spend the same amount of time taken to write this piece studying "false positives."

Sounds like one of these coaches who endeavor to stay young and be cool instead of being the roleRead More model they are entrusted to be! I personally agree with this mom. In these types of situations when an individual feels comfortable enough to make such comments like these to young girls, they are testing the waters to see how far they can go. Next you will hear about the coach having a sexual relationship with one of his players... I know these are strong words but respectively, he fits the “standard profile” of a pedophile. I know some of the other parents say they "support the coach believing he provides positive leadership" BUT even pedophiles are more often than not respected community members who goes to great lengths to present him/herself as an exemplary person. They develop a persona of goodness above reproach, thus thwarting any suspicion of wrongdoing, especially against a child, whom they have professed great care and concern. Parents, think about it -- what respectable adult has their condoms visible to not just the kids but to anyone that walked by? Why not in the glove compartment or trunk? Says a lot about his character, judgment and respect for himself and the school. Not to mention, instead of humbly not responding at all or saying something like, "at least you know your coach is safe" he says, "at least you know your coach is a pimp" ??? NONETHELESS, if he’s not “grooming”, he's walking a fine line and truly needs to get his [blank] in check.

I agree w/ Nina. Young adults should have mature role models who do not make sex "cool"Read More and should have either apologized to the girls for seeing his personal property, or could have turned it into a learning experience and moment to remind his athletes that if they are engaging an any sort of sexual behaviors, to be safe and use protection. Additionally, the school should (if they haven't already) hold a meeting with all staff (athletic and academic) and remind them that they are professionals, not friends of the students. Children today are not stupid, but glorifying poor behavior and justifying it, only encourages such behavior.

I can be reached on my Face Book John Almaraz. I believe Hand Ball can help in all areas, Bulling, Weight loss and confidence. BOLLA!

Frank you are in deniial. MTHS is super ghetto. Really??
Jim March 11, 2013 at 12:33 pm
@Frank....Did you read anything other than the word Ghetto? The whole point of my note was how a lotRead More of other schools turn their noses up at MT and treat them unfairly and call them Ghetto. Yet...MT shows up for City parades etc... unlike other local High School bands. This was a tragedy and you're picking a fight on the same side dumba@$#...

There are those that are so concerned about reproductive rights that they'd rather that a mentallyRead More retarded person be raped than have the family of the same person have any input as to who and how a person with the mental IQ of a 5 year old spends their time or is protected. Yes, indeed, it is very very sad.

I see I have no response. And I'll bet the majority of people would respond "ofRead More course"..... Sorry folks, to the first airport in Oregon ( Medford,35 miles over the Northern border) , and flight time to San Diego (Southern border) from SF are nearly identical. WTH! Congratulations Bay Area...you are in Central California....Teachers need to teach and be allowed to do so.

I think there should be a change of the starting time and stopping time of the school hours. itRead More would help in the amount of traffic?
Jim February 8, 2013 at 03:46 pm
This is not a solution. Having 4,000 kids crossing MORE crosswalks and waling FURTHER to school onlyRead More pushes the problem further away from the actual property and creates more opportunity for kids to wander, screw around and get injured by vehicles jamming a still narrow entry and exit area at the surrounding parks. Are they going to post more (under-performing) crossing guards to get the kids to Morse park? They currently don't have enough as it is today. Most of the kids aren't crossing the street where the crossing guards actually are! As another post pointed out, this is a symptom of a problem that the District wont admit to. No school bus service to these schools. Additionally the E-Tran service is lackluster at best and subject to constant flux as "budget concerns" become the continual excuse to provide less and less service to taxpayers in Elk Grove. Perhaps parents of Franklin/Johnson Students need to look into a legal challenge to the school district's bus policy as a negligent act in light of student safety concerns and recent injuries to students. That might force them to look at the problem and not simply change the geography of the problem. All they have accomplished now is they get to say a kid was hit by a car at a park instead of at their school cross walk. EGUSD is a disgrace in terms of truly handling issues.
EGUSD watcher February 13, 2013 at 12:08 am
Give me a break! Granted building HS/MS complexes that house so many kids has its issues. At theRead More time it was built, the state funded transportation and the area had not grown up. Fast forward to today, the state abdicates its responsibility to school transportation. The neighborhood has matured. Are those EGUSD's fault? There is a little bit of responsibility to go around. Ever watch how those kids act when they get out of school? I wasn't raised to act that way. Ever watched drivers that drive stupid? Maybe we need a few cops out there to give tickets to those who do U turns in the middle of the street! There is nothing wrong with kids walking and riding bikes to school. If there was more of that going on, there wouldn't be a traffic issue.

Excellent! It's nice to read about private business stepping up and providing on their own. It wouldRead More be even much more nicer is the business climate were more friendly where more businesses had more disposable profit margins to set aside for charity.

Starr King Middle School students are working toward earning a NOOK courtesy of Donorschoose.org.Read More What a great organization that helps us teachers bring things to the classroom that we would otherwise not be able to.

Actually, the lice shampoo didn't work for us at all, but this worked great, and was much less toxicRead More than the shampoo option: http://www.nuvoforheadlice.com Also, our school said my son could go back to school as soon as he was treated, and they did not check for nits, nor do they have a no nits policy.
