Firefighters from around the county come to brush up on their skills at the department's brand-new training facility on East Stockton Blvd., which includes a building that can be set on fire for drills, along with areas for practicing trench and cliff rescues. Fire Marshal George Apple and his staff of inspectors ensure that new and remodeled buildings are up to code, while special task forces work on disaster planning and terrorism readiness. New parents who want instruction in installing their child's car seat can call the department's public education officer, who also makes safety presentations to schools and businesses. Residents wanting to report an emergency should call 911. All non-urgent calls go to the department's administrative offices. The department also maintains an arson tip hotline.
