An attractive collection of earth-toned buildings that sits on the southern edge of Elk Grove, Cosumnes Oaks High SchoolMore was built for a population boom that never materialized. About 1,000 students now attend a school intended to serve twice that many, a situation the school district is trying to rectify through changes in attendance boundaries. In the meantime, Cosumnes Oaks' current students enjoy a brand-new campus including a library, auditorium and sports facilities. They can sharpen their knife skills at the on-site culinary school or learn about green building at the school's architecture and urban-planning academy.

Northern California's largest school district, Elk Grove Unified spans 320 square miles of suburban, urban and ruralMore territory, including parts of Sacramento, Rancho Cordova and unincorporated county land. Its 62,000 students speak close to 80 different languages, and just over half come from families whose incomes qualify them for free or reduced-price meals. Unlike in some other large school districts, Elk Grove Unified students consistently score higher than the state average on achievement tests - a success school officials attribute to continuity of leadership. The district has had a small number of superintendents in its 50-year history, and some school board members have served for decades.</p> <p>In addition to its 39 elementary schools, nine middle schools and nine high schools, the district operates three continuation schools, a school for children with special needs, an adult school and its own charter school. A new virtual academy allows kids who don't do well in traditional school environments to learn from home. Monterey Trail High School shares a sprawling campus, complete with a brand-new football stadium, with its feederMore middle school, Edward Harris Jr. Middle School. The school has over 2000 students, over half of whom qualify for free or reduced lunches based on federal family income guidelines. Monterey Trail offers honors and advanced placement classes, as well as bilingual teaching assistants for those students learning English. A career academy trains students for jobs in engineering and computer science. In addition to sports, after-school activities include band, a dance company and cultural and topic-specific student groups, including Fashion Club and Hmong Club. For parents, the school offers a Parent Institute, a nine-week course on how to help teenagers prepare for and gain acceptance to college.
