An attractive collection of earth-toned buildings that sits on the southern edge of Elk Grove, Cosumnes Oaks High SchoolMore was built for a population boom that never materialized. About 1,000 students now attend a school intended to serve twice that many, a situation the school district is trying to rectify through changes in attendance boundaries. In the meantime, Cosumnes Oaks' current students enjoy a brand-new campus including a library, auditorium and sports facilities. They can sharpen their knife skills at the on-site culinary school or learn about green building at the school's architecture and urban-planning academy.

Monterey Trail High School shares a sprawling campus, complete with a brand-new football stadium, with its feederMore middle school, Edward Harris Jr. Middle School. The school has over 2000 students, over half of whom qualify for free or reduced lunches based on federal family income guidelines. Monterey Trail offers honors and advanced placement classes, as well as bilingual teaching assistants for those students learning English. A career academy trains students for jobs in engineering and computer science. In addition to sports, after-school activities include band, a dance company and cultural and topic-specific student groups, including Fashion Club and Hmong Club. For parents, the school offers a Parent Institute, a nine-week course on how to help teenagers prepare for and gain acceptance to college.
